The 1k swim (yellow loop) will be patrolled by Otter Tail County Sheriffs and Dalton Fire & Rescue. Athletes will go in a clockwise loop marked by buoys. The water depth does not exceed 8 feet, with an average water temperature of 70 degrees in late august.
The 29k bike (blue line) will be 60% on grueling gravel roads with constant elevation, and 40% on Central Lakes Trail, a buttery-flat paved bike trail. A real dichotomy of terrain. Athletes will bike a total of 1 mile on paved county road to go get to and from the divergent point of the route. Safety is the priority on the county highway. We will have signage, volunteers, and possibly sheriffs at turning points and road crossings. There will be an aid station at the turn in Dalton, this is also a great place for fans to see the athletes after the grueling gravel section.
The 8k run (red line) will be out and back. Athletes will make their way through the hiking trails at the campground, and pop out to a gravel road that will lead to more trails and elevation at The Ugly Duckling Lodge, that boasts scenic views of Swan Lake along their extensive trail system. There will be a small aid station at the turn-around point at Ugly Duckling Lodge.
This triathlon will be timed manually and casually. We will be acknowledging the podium finishers for Men and Women, but please do not expect to receive split times or printouts. If you are concerned with knowing your splits, please plan to time them on your own devices. Speaking of split times, the course is hilly and dirty, so don’t expect to move at “pavement pace”.
